An initiative organized by friends and neighbors to support Rebecca in her fight with cancer
About Rebecca Smith
Prior to May 2020, if asked to describe Rebecca, we would use words such as high energy, always on the go, competitive, health-conscious, organizer, deal finder, travel & party planner, determined, a woman of faith, a teacher, a HUGE groupie (Rick Springfield & Donny Osmond), a gifted chef, and above all a devoted mom and wife.
March 2020, found Rebecca challenging her family to a fitness contest with a $100 cash prize to the winner. Rebecca was determined to win the contest (although she was exempt from the prize). She was walking 4-5 miles a day at a sprinter’s pace. We call it her “Disneyland walk.” It ensures she covers the most ground in the quickest time so as to not miss out on anything. This is how Rebecca goes through life, getting the most out of every moment and experience. Her energy level keeps most of us in her wake trying to keep up.
In April of last year, Rebecca had an acute onset of breathing difficulties. She wondered if she was experiencing asthma or possibly COVID 19. Within weeks she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer at the age of 55. Since learning of her diagnosis, Rebecca has received chemotherapy every 3 weeks for 8 months and is currently receiving her 4th type of chemotherapy drug every week. Rebecca’s latest PET scan showed cancer had spread to her left hip, right lung, and lymph nodes. Due to the pandemic and Rebecca’s diagnosis, she has been on quarantine in her home since April of 2020.
As Rebecca has faced this incredible trial in her life, she has shown an inner strength and courage that packs a punch. Words such as fight, faith, family and strength have become her focus. The energy she used to put into planning parties, traveling, trying new recipes, attending concerts and Broadway musicals, enjoying 80s music all things Disney, and shopping at TJ Maxx have all been focused on fighting the fatigue, nausea, fear and anxiety as she battles cancer.
Any energy she has left is given to enjoy the moments with her sweet husband of 30 years, Kevin, her children Nicole (28), Todd (26), Tyson (24), Jenna (19), daughter-in-law: Taylor (27), Kensy (24); and grand-baby: Claire (11 months). Her family has rallied around her in love and service
We watch in humility as she fights this lonely battle, and we want to show our love and support so she knows she is not fighting alone. In her suffering we see strength, a strength that leads us to describe Rebecca with one word, STRONG.
Kevin and Rebecca have led lives of service. Before they married, they both served missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They have devoted their lives to their immediate and extended family. Rebecca taught elementary school and is currently on leave from Vista School where she is the librarian. She loves the children and misses them. Kevin’s career has been centered around enhancing Tuacahn Center for the Arts where he currently serves as executive director. Together they have opened their home to many. They serve faithfully in their Church and have blessed the lives of countless.
